Dale Osborn
Dale
says he graduated from CHS as summa cum nerd.
Come on now, everybody knows that
Fred
Benford
was the chief nerd!
Dale
was really bright. Son of a school
teacher. Graduated from OSU
with a degree in Electrical Engineering. He
says no one wanted to hire him so he joined the Navy and became a fighter pilot.
He says it beat going to work. He
says the nine years were mostly fun
dampened by the early stages of the
Viet Nam
war. He planned
to make the Navy a career, then retire after twenty years and maybe teach
physics in
Utah
. He loved the beauty and hunting
and fishing opportunities of the state. Smart
guy … missed more tours in
Viet Nam
!
But fate entered. He decided to get
out of the Navy and go to work for a living (his words).
He said he was obsolete as an engineer and fighter aircraft flight test
experience was the only marketable asset he had, and Hughes Aircraft Company, in
Culver City
,
CA
offered him a job. He said he
needed the money so he took the job. He
said it was fun … flying and working to develop and test airborne radar
systems and missiles. Then
Howard
Hughes
died and General Motors bought the company and the fun largely went out of it.
He said he hung on until he could get a cheap, brass-plated-parachute
bailout in 1993. Now he strives to
live the life of a gentleman sportsman. In
the Spring and Fall he goes to his small house on
Grand
Lake
and Summer and Winter in his coastal foothills home in
Ventura County
,
CA
.
Through all those adventures he was accompanied by two wives: sequentially
Donna
Mae
Owens
CHS classmate for 10+ years and
Stephanie
his wife since 1973. He has one
fine son,
Stephen
Scott
Osborn
who is a school teacher in
Seattle
… and several excellent dogs.
